Summary

Dr. Pagona-Noni Maravelaki-Kalaitzaki was born in Chalkida-Evia-Greece in 1960. She received her degree in Chemistry from the National Kapodestrian University of Athens/Greece in 1983 and her PhD from the Department of Environmental Science of the Ca' Foscari Univ. of Venice/Italy in 1992. She was Employee of the 25th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities (Chania-Crete-Greece), in the Hellenic Ministry of Culture (1999-2007). She is currently Assistant Professor in the Technical University of Crete, Department of Sciences, Laboratory of Analytical and Environmental Chemistry. She is serving as Lecturer at post-graduate level on "Conservation and Restoration of Historic Monuments - Materials and Conservation Treatments", Interdepartmental Graduate School, Dept. of Chemical Engineering - Dept. of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens. Her current R&D areas are in the decay mechanisms, weathering products and conservation methods of exposed stones, the study of the technology of historical mortars, development of new materials for the structural and surface conservation of monuments, laser assisted techniques applied for the diagnosis and conservation of artefacts and analysis of pigments and ancient pottery.

Research Interests

Study of decay mechanisms and weathering products of exposed stones and their conservation methods
Study of the technology of historical mortars and design of repaired mortars compatible with the historical ones
Development of new materials (water repellents, consolidants and mortars) for the structural and surface conservation of monuments, based upon studies of the original materials used for their construction
Study of the effects of laser cleaning process on exposed stones
Detection and analysis of pigments of ancient pottery
Study of laser assisted techniques applied for the diagnosis and conservation of artefacts
Study of laser assisted and optical non-destructive techniques applied for the monitoring of the weathering of artefacts
Study of the chemical composition of the artefacts with the aid of non-destructive spectroscopic techniques (e.g. EDXRF, LIBS)
